Recently, I came across a book called ‘Letters to My Son’. It is a short but sweet book of Love that taps on our shoulder and points at our oblivious self that remains busy in this mechanical world! In the process, we stop appreciating our parents who actually are living God who will do everything possible to make us happy but never ask for anything in return! Give it a read for a ride down the memory lane that ends with a dramatic stop!
Saravana Kumar Murugan, the writer of this lovely book, and I have a little chit – chat on the book and many other topics! Read till the end as he provides wise advice to the upcoming writers as well!
1. Can you tell us a bit about your objective behind your book, “Letters to Son”?
[Sarav]: First of all, a heartfelt thanks to you, Parishmita. It’s a pleasure to be interviewed by you. ‘Letters to My Son’ is all about love. The love of a single father, Aarav who brings up his son, Nirav, protecting him against all odds, is unimaginably pure. The purity of parenthood and importance of love in life are the objective behind the book.
Let me also tell you about “Coffee Reads” series and the idea behind penning down books of approximately ten thousand words. In this digital world, people are more attracted to shorter books than the traditional lengthy novels. Not to offend anyone, but the reality is we are in T-20 era and most of us are happy to spend maximum two to three hours for entertainment. Authors, publishers and sellers like Amazon have understood readers pulse well. That’s the reason Amazon and other leaders in the market started accepting books of any size. Hence the concept “Coffee Reads” …books that can be read in an hour and still has a message for readers to cherish about.
2. What or who inspires you to write?
[Sarav]: Dreams. I am a big dreamer. It all started with my angel in dreams “Isha” …I started penning down poems for her and later started writing short stories and novels with Isha as the female lead character name. I am also a good listener. I listen to conversations and I take inspiration from them. So, dreams, people and places I visit inspire me to write. And inspirations alone do not help. My biggest support system are my wife and mother. They shower unlimited love and support me to write better.
3. So, is the character of Mrinalini in your book “Letters to my Son” inspired by your muse, Isha?
[Sarav]: No! Mrinalini is very different girl. She is someone who love being independent and happy. Isha, on the other hand, is an amazing personality who is filled with love … and love only.
4. Which book genres do you enjoy the most to read?
[Sarav]: Well, without any second thoughts, it is romance. I love to read romantic fiction and crime thrillers the most.
5. What, according to you, is the significance of a book’s cover?
[Sarav]: “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” This is the most common mistake authors and publishers make. People grab a book by its cover and blurb. With a good book cover and better promotional strategies, one can reach good heights.
6. Can we expect another new book from you in the near future? (If yes, do provide the genre or idea behind the forthcoming book.)
[Sarav]: Of course! Not just one… you can expect three books (Coffee Reads) in the month of May and June. I am supposed to complete the book “Are You Game” on a controversial topic by the end of April. However due to professional commitments I cannot complete the book. I am working on it and I am hoping to get it published soon. It’s of genre “Social Cause” and “Romance”. The other books I am working falls under the genre Self Help titled The Writer’s Dream: The Lifeline. (Book 2 of Writing Series) and the other is of genre “Romance” titled “yet another love story.”
7. Any advice to the upcoming writers who are reading this interview?
[Sarav]: Write, read and rewrite, because only practice can make you perfect. When you write, do listen to your heart, as it will help you write heart-touching stories instead of mere bestsellers.
